Lately, Queensryche has been trying to cash in on their loyal fans, and this disc takes it to the next extreme. I was willing to put up with their last “Best of” cd that did include a few unreleased demos. However, since the first day Tate talked about a cover album I was completely opposed. When it did hit the shelves I decided to take a listen, much to my discomfort. Take Cover’s name is an obvious play upon their masterpiece track “Take Hold” and the cover consists of band member
with face masks on. I can only imagine these were the same ones they had to wear in the studio, otherwise dying from the smell of their own shit. And that’s the best I can say about this album.
Nearly every song has a duel guitar solo between Wilton and Stone. While Wilton has maintained a decent tone throughout his career, Stone’s is often too saturated in high-mids, making his performances painful. The rest of the band is still kicking and sounding strong, with Scott and Ed keeping the rhythms interesting. Now the part that everyone is waiting for, what does Geoff sound like? A mere shadow of his former self. Tate is once again trying to sing high, but with no power at all. It also seems as if he was rushed through his process, as many of these songs contain notes that are way out of key and sometimes even off time. Overall,
I wouldn’t recommend this album to anyone, not even hardcore Queensryche fans. This album should have never happened and Queensryche should have never put their name on it. Yes, it’s just that bad; actually it’s the worst of the year.
Rating: If Spinal Tap can have 11, Queensryche get 0 for this.
