RATING: 10 / 10

Upon my first look, I figured this would be a regular digipack. Well, I was dead wrong. Unlike a regular one, this has four pockets that all unfold to reveal the cd. Printed on each pocket are flames that look to arise from the disc. Not only that, but a full booklet is added, all lyrics included, along with very cool imagery. On to the music, which is what I'm sure everyone is looking forward to. Symphony X has taken a much needed heavier approach to their sound. With a revamped studio, the production on this disc tops all of their previous releases. The music has also taken on a heavier sound, but unlike Dream Theater's latest release, Symphony X has done it right.

Russell Allen's vocals are much harsher going at some times to full on growls. However, that's not to say there is no melody either. "Paradise Lost," the ballad, has a beautiful melody similar to the Symphony X of old times. The rhythm section seems to have taken new life in tracks, mainly on the third track "Domination." Michael Pinella is given his times to shine along with moments to sit back and complement Romeo's riffs and solos. Romeo is once again the focal point on this disc, as is with every cd he has managed to play on. From his heavy rhythms to lightning fast solos, there's not a song on Paradise Lost that leaves you doubting Romeo's ability. Paradise Lost is a solid disc straight through, and will keep you interested throughout. Mine comes with a bonus DVD that contains various footage of the band performing their songs all over the world. These are not pro shot videos, for the most part, but worthy of the extra money. If there's one disc you buy, I highly recommend Symphony X's Paradise Lost!
